Who wants to break it to dads that their teenage daughters are not their property? Who wants to tell them that joking about them like they are is just weird? But more than that, who wants to tell the members of the media who perpetuate that old joke just how tired it really is?
Once you get past a million shares on something like this, I’m going to step in to play Humorless Feminist Mom to the Hands Off My Daughter Industrial Complex. Because I have a 15 year-old daughter, too. And when BuzzFeed runs a story like this above the invitation, “Want great parenting tips in your inbox twice a week?” I question whether this constitutes “great parenting tips.” When Fox LA reports, “Dads will be dads! A hilarious photo shows a dad posing with his daughter’s homecoming date before the teens went to a homecoming dance in Wisconsin,” I think that merits some skepticism over whether that’s just “Dads being dads.” And when Seventeen approvingly reports on this as a tale of “Dad for the win,” I’m sorry but now I’m going to have to blow a gasket.
The media’s reaction to a viral “whatever you do to my daughter, I do to you” photo shows how little we value girls
Pull the sticks out of your click-bait slinging asses.
Dad’s pay the bills for the daughter, feed and house the daughter, and take care of most all aspects of responsibility for the daughter excepting maybe schoolwork and what have you. College, car, etc. How much do you think a millennial with no work experience is paying for on their own in general? When she gets sick or needs dental work, who’s responsible for her getting proper medical care? Parents. Who is one of the parents? Ol’ pappy. Sure, the shotgun cleaning cliché is very much beaten to death, but this is very much part of the social interaction between fathers and potential male mates to daughters. It’s humorous. It’s in good fun. Look at the genuine and sincere smiles on their faces.
But do you report this as unnecessary and overt hostility between males? Nope. It’s more bitching about how women are somehow getting the shaft on this. “What’s that? A dad greets the boyfriend with a double-barrel shotgun? Must be the GIRL who’s being oppressed!” You’ll run articles ad nauseam on how men should be more protective of women from potential harm and when they makes acceptable gestures showing they care without becoming volatile neanderthals, you shit on them for it.
Fucking morons. None of you are competent enough to make backwater church newsletters, let alone write articles for a nationally recognized brand.
I’m 100% done with the gun pointing dad cliche, but it is interesting to note that I’ve never heard anyone complaining that it’s sexist to assume that every guy seeking to date “the daughter” must have some terrible intentions and must be threatened to be kept in line. The boy roughly the same age as “the daughter” is the one staring down the barrel of the gun, but naw it’s “the daughter” that’s scared out of dating.
