I mean it’s cool that they admit the government option is not a good one. Public defenders are usually not the best option, but I think a solution is similar to an idea frequently floated when it comes to public schools. Vouchers.

Rather than the government assigning you a public defender, they can provide you a voucher to go out and find your own legal advice. This allows low income individuals to find better legal advice and have lawyers compete for the business of the defendant.
