From the size to the actual colors and designs, Target is doing right by starting to sell less sexual clothing for young girls, as well as offering designs from superheroes to Disney Princesses for both girls and boys.
Gosh I’ve been having these complaints for YEARS. Back when I was in middle/high school, it was a week long hunting trip to find shorts for me that were dress code appropriate. Granted, I’m 6in taller than the average girl, always been 90%ile.
And I always wanted boys clothes for the characters, but the cuts were terrible. Crew neck tees meant for duck necks, ugh. I think at the time Hot Topic and some online places were the only stores I could get girls cut character clothes. Thankfully that’s changed a lot.
For the teeny kids, I’m not so bothered by the shorts for the girls, but it’s when they start being 8+ that that is wildly not okay. And it’s so sad that that carries into juniors, because there aren’t a lot of other options without hitting up “mommy” companies like Land’s End or Eddie Bauer. It’s absolutely possible to have fun, fashionable clothes for kids and teens that aren’t inappropriate or dowdy, but that doesn’t seem to register. Instead crotch short dresses and butt cheeks shorts are the norm. But also maybe if parents stopped letting their kids wear these clothes, then companies would stop selling them. Oh boy.
