Here, I respond to the pitch, rhythm, and emotional impact of “Flies and Spiders” by Howard Shore from The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, by means of paint.

Most of you know that moment in the Flies and Spiders chapter of The Hobbit where Bilbo climbs to the top of the trees in the dark, dreary forest of Mirkwood and is met by blinding sunlight and butterflies, is one that means the world to me.  This wouldn’t be the first time I’ve made art inspired by it.  That moment in the book, the film, and the music so perfectly composed for it, remind me that no matter what darkness we may find ourselves in, no matter how deeply entrenched we may feel, that it is never the end, and that we will always “find the sun.”

Was this from Wednesday’s class? Because I kept telling everyone around me I was hearing Lord of the Rings from the walls and they were looking at me like I was crazy!
