who wants to speculate about Death Stranding with me
I’ve never played a Kojima game before, but I just watched the trailer, and it reminded me of (hear me out) this one freaky part of Moby Dick. I want to say it was “the savage” Queequeg who notices in a pod a mother whale with a baby whale still attached by the umbilical cord. He remarks something to the effect that it looks just like how when they harpoon whales, the whale is attached to the boat by the harpoon’s rope. The boat carries around a dead whale like a fetus. It’s supposed to be one of those whacky Melville life and death are the same moments. In Death Stranding, we see the same thing, a bunch of dead whale with fetuses attached. The black handprints look like they fill up with oil, the principle byproduct of whaling which Melville spends chapters discussing the importance of for churches, coronations, day to day life, and also relates it to a giant circle jerk (seriously.). However, this oil looks more like petroleum, much like what happens when there’s an offshore oil rig accident and it kills marine life. Given the once importance of whaling oil and the hopefully eventually obsolete petroleum oil manufacturing, and how they both come at a great cost, I think it’s another freaky life and death correlation. I have no idea what to think about the implied cesarean section mpreg though.
